The concept of rays holds profound significance in understanding fundamental forces of nature, particularly light, heat, and electricity. These phenomena, while appearing distinct in everyday experience, share deep underlying connections that reveal the unity of natural forces.

In Nature, Rays represent a manifestation of energy that travels through space.

What modern science often calls “forces” or “energy” was understood in older traditions as different types of rays or emanations. These rays aren’t merely abstract concepts but represent actual energetic phenomena that can be measured and observed through their effects.

The “Seven Mystic rays of the Sun” mentioned in ancient texts suggest a sophisticated understanding of how solar energy differentiates into various forms. The first of these rays, called Sushumna, and it is associated with lunar light.

Light as Vibratory Energy

Light itself is not a simple, homogeneous phenomenon but consists of rays with varying wavelengths and properties. Scientific measurements have determined that luminous waves vary “from about seven hundred and sixty millionths of a millimetre at the red end of the spectrum to about three hundred and ninety-three millionths of a millimetre at the violet end”.

However, the deeper nature of light remains enigmatic. While modern science often describes light as “undulations of ether” or vibrations, there’s recognition that light may be more than just a “mode of motion”. Interestingly, experiments have shown that light can be “stored up for use”, as demonstrated by placing an engraving kept in darkness into full sunlight for 15 minutes, then placing it on sensitive paper in darkness, resulting in an impression forming over 24 hours.

Heat and Its Relationship to Other Forces

Heat represents another form of ray energy that interacts closely with light and electricity. The relationship between heat and other forces presents fascinating paradoxes. For instance, when gaseous bodies contract through cooling, the heat generated by the contraction actually exceeds the heat lost that caused the contraction in the first place. This counterintuitive behavior suggests deeper principles at work.

Some researchers have proposed that heat or “caloric” is not merely a motion but a “material substance flowing from the Sun through Space”. This substance would have both attractive and repulsive properties – it attracts particles of matter while having self-repulsive energy.

Electricity as Fundamental Force

Electricity represents yet another manifestation of ray energy. While often described as a “fluid” or a “mode of motion,” there’s evidence suggesting electricity has an atomic nature. As noted by Helmholtz, “electricity also, positive as well as negative, is divided into definite elementary portions, which behave like atoms of electricity”.

The occult perspective considers electricity as “atomic” and therefore material in nature, even if imperceptible to ordinary senses.

Electricity is seen as one aspect of a universal energy that manifests in various forms. It is described as “the ONE Life at the upper rung of Being”, suggesting its fundamental role in natural processes.

The Unifying Principle

What connects these various phenomena (light, heat, and electricity) is that they represent different manifestations of the same underlying energy. They are “correlations” of a primary force. The transformation of one form into another demonstrates their fundamental unity:

This unity extends to vibrational frequencies. Research has identified different rates of vibration for different states of matter:

  • Molecular vibrations at 100,000,000 per second
  • Inter-molecular vibrations at 300,000,000 per second
  • Atomic vibrations at 900,000,000 per second
  • Inter-atomic vibrations at 2,700,000,000 per second
  • AEtheric vibrations at 8,100,000,000 per second
  • Inter-AEtheric vibrations at 24,300,000,000 per second

These vibrations represent the foundation of all physical phenomena, including rays of various types.

Modern Scientific Perspectives

Modern scientific research continues to explore the interconnections between these forces. The study of solar phenomena has been particularly illuminating, with researchers observing “sheets of flame” and other photogenic matter that “pendulates with mighty energies, and by communicating its motion to the ethereal medium in stellar space, produces heat and light in far distant worlds” .

Some scientists have even suggested that these phenomena might be connected to a form of “vital action” echoing ancient concepts about the living quality of cosmic forces. The Sun itself has been described as:

“The store-house of Vital Force, which is the Noumenon of Electricity”.

Through ongoing scientific investigation and integration of diverse perspectives, our understanding of rays and their relationship to light, heat, and electricity continues to evolve, revealing the profound interconnectedness of natural phenomena.
