The septenary principle – the division of nature and humanity into seven distinct aspects—forms a fundamental concept in esoteric philosophy. The Seven Rays represent cosmic energies that manifest throughout all levels of existence, including the human constitution.
Cosmic Origins of the Seven Rays
The Seven Rays originate from the highest spiritual realms. They are described as emanations from the “Central Spiritual Sun”, flowing through various planes of existence before manifesting in the physical world. These rays are the “Seven Creative Powers” or “Dhyan-Chohans (1)” that radiate from the primordial Light.
The rays represent differentiated aspects of the One universal energy. They are described as:
“Seven sounding letters” that “sing the praise of the immortal God”, indicating their vibratory nature.
These seven forces are fundamental to the structure of the cosmos and are reflected in every aspect of manifestation, from the macrocosmic to the microcosmic.
The Seven Principles in Human Constitution
The human being, as a microcosm of the universe, embodies these seven cosmic principles. The esoteric doctrine teaches that humans possess seven distinct principles or aspects of consciousness, which correspond directly to the cosmic Seven Rays.
These seven human principles are divided into higher and lower aspects. The higher triad consists of:
- Atma (Spirit)
- Buddhi (Spiritual Soul)
- Manas (Human Soul/Mind)
And the lower quaternary consists of: 4. Kama (Desires/Passions) 5. Prana (Life Energy) 6. Linga Sarira (Astral Body) 7. Sthula Sarira (Physical Body)
This sevenfold division is described as “the time-honored classification of the trans-Himalayan Arhat Esoteric School”.
The Connection Between Rays and Principles
The relationship between the cosmic Seven Rays and the human principles is profound. Each principle in the human constitution is essentially formed by and corresponds to one of the Seven Rays. As explained in the esoteric teachings, “every man is a septenate (or a combination of principles, each having its origin in a quality of that special Dhyani)”.
The Seven Rays influence human development through their interaction with the corresponding principles. The highest principle, Atma, is directly connected to the first ray, described as “proceeding directly from the One”. It is the “divine Ray” that survives through all incarnations.
The Seven Rays as Evolutionary Forces
The Seven Rays play a crucial role in human evolution. They are the “seven distinct rays” that guide the development of consciousness through successive rounds and races. Each ray is associated with specific qualities and characteristics that influence individual development.
As stated:
“The inner man is drawn into the one and highest beam of the Parent-SUN” through gradual advancement through the rays.”
During the evolutionary journey, the human monad progresses through experiences related to each of the seven rays. This progression allows for the development of different aspects of consciousness.
The Seven Rays and the Seven Centers
The Seven Rays correspond to Seven Energy Centers or chakras within the human constitution. These centers serve as focal points for the reception and expression of the ray energies. The “Seven Nervous Plexuses of the body” radiate these seven rays, suggesting the physiological correspondence to these metaphysical principles.
These energy centers are described as “the seven Layu centres“ (2), points where differentiation begins. Through these centers, the cosmic forces of the Seven Rays are anchored in the human constitution, allowing for the expression of consciousness through various levels of being.
Practical Significance
Understanding the Seven Rays and their relationship to human constitution has practical significance for spiritual development. By recognizing the qualities and influences of each ray, individuals can work consciously with these energies to achieve greater balance and integration.
The development of all seven aspects is necessary for complete spiritual unfoldment.
The Seven Rays thus provide a comprehensive framework for understanding human nature and evolution, revealing the intimate connection between cosmic forces and individual consciousness and represent the ultimate spiritual potentials that can be realized through the harmonious development of all principles.
