The concept of rays plays a fundamental role in the understanding of human evolution and spiritual development within the esoteric philosophy. These rays represent cosmic forces or energies that influence both the physical and spiritual aspects of human existence.

In esoteric literature, Rays are described as emanations from the Central Cosmic Sun, functioning as channels through which divine energy flows.

There are seven primary rays, each with specific names: Sushumna, Harikesa, Viswakarman, Viswatryarchas, Sannaddha, Sarvavasu, and Swaraj. These rays have mystical properties and distinct applications in various states of consciousness for occult purposes.

The totality of these seven rays spread throughout the solar system constitutes the physical foundation (Upadhi) of what science calls ether, within which forces like light, heat, and electricity correlate to produce their terrestrial effects. Beyond these physical manifestations, these rays also generate psychic and spiritual effects that emanate from what occultists refer to as the supra-solar Upadhi, or Akasha.

Rays and Human Constitution

In human evolution, rays play a critical role in the formation and development of the spiritual and physical aspects of beings. The concept of Rays is well illustrated through the metaphor of:

“The life-ray, the one, like a thread through many beads (pearls)”

…representing the Vedantic concept of Sutratma or life-thread running through successive generations.

Human beings are described as having evolved through the influence of these rays, which operate through what is called the “triple evolutionary scheme”:

  1. The Monadic (spiritual) evolution
  2. The Intellectual evolution
  3. The Physical evolution

These three aspects are described as “finite aspects or the reflections on the field of Cosmic Illusion of ATMA, the seventh, the ONE REALITY”.

Rays in Spiritual Development

The spiritual development of humans is intimately connected with these rays. As a person progresses spiritually, they align more closely with higher rays.

This process represents the journey of the human monad (spiritual essence) back to its divine source.

The connection between an individual and their “Prototype in Heaven” becomes stronger as they evolve spiritually, with their personal deity (the seventh principle) choosing their terrestrial abode.

Rays and Root Races

The esoteric philosophy describes human evolution as occurring through successive “Root Races,” each with distinct characteristics related to the influence of specific rays. For example, the Third Race is described as having created the “SONS OF WILL AND YOGA” through the power of Kriyasakti (thought power), representing a significant evolutionary step.

The Fifth Root Race (our current humanity) exists at a particular point in the cycle where there is a balance between spiritual perception and brain intellect. The teaching indicates that full development of Manas (mind) as a direct ray from Universal MAHAT will only be reached in the Fifth Round, though some sub-races have already crossed their “crucial point” and are at “the apex of spiritual development”.

The Third Eye and Ray Evolution

An interesting aspect of ray evolution relates to the “third eye” that humans supposedly possessed in earlier races. This third eye is described as having been an active organ of spiritual vision that gradually atrophied as humanity evolved more physical senses.

This transformation mirrors the evolution of consciousness from spiritual perception to intellectual understanding. As humanity moved along the “descending arc” of its cycle, the spiritual third eye receded, but the teaching suggests that as we move along the “ascending arc,” spiritual perception will gradually reawaken.

Conclusion

The ray concept provides a framework for understanding human evolution as not merely physical but simultaneously spiritual, intellectual, and physical. Rather than a purely Darwinian model focused on material development, this perspective sees evolution as guided by intelligent cosmic forces working through these rays, with the ultimate goal being the return of the human monad to its divine source, enriched by the experiences gained through material existence.

Human evolution is thus presented as a grand cycle of spiritual emanation and return

with rays serving as the channels through which divine energy flows into manifestation and through which consciousness eventually returns to its source, transformed and perfected by its journey through matter.
