The concept of rays plays a fundamental role in both cosmic and terrestrial evolution according to esoteric philosophy. These rays represent not merely physical light but dynamic forces that initiate, guide, and sustain evolutionary processes throughout the universe.
Primordial Origins
At the most fundamental level, cosmic evolution begins with what is described as:
“The ONE RAY” that “MULTIPLIES THE SMALLER RAYS”
This primary ray precedes form itself, as:
“LIFE PRECEDES FORM, AND LIFE SURVIVES THE LAST ATOM.”
This ray functions like:
“A THREAD THROUGH MANY BEADS”
… (Sushumna Ray), connecting all manifestations of life across the cosmos. This primordial ray represents the first impulse of divine thought that “impregnates matter” and initiates the evolutionary process.
From this perspective:
| “The entire Cosmos has sprung from the DIVINE THOUGHT.” |
The Seven Cosmic Rays
The universal evolution unfolds through seven primary rays that emerge from the manifested Logos (1). These Seven Rays “spread through the Solar system” and constitute the physical Upadhi (basis) of the Ether; in which Upadhi (light, heat, electricity, etc.), correlate to produce their terrestrial effects.
These rays have specific names in esoteric tradition: “Sushumna, Harikesa, Viswakarman, Viswatryarchas, Sannaddha, Sarvavasu and Swaraj.”
Rays and Planetary Formation
In cosmic evolution, rays play a crucial role in the formation of planets and solar systems. When comets take their form from the Milky Way (the prepared material ready for use), they begin their journey through space where “the conditions of equilibrizing and polarity” are prepared for them by Fohat (the cosmic energy). These comets eventually settle and begin “to form themselves into suns.”
Rays and Terrestrial Evolution
On Earth, rays influence the development of all kingdoms in nature.
The “Life Current”, called by the Hindus – Prana (2), radiates, permeates, acts, and moves in the astral plane, becoming “stranded off into many other rays” through a process similar to refraction. This severance of the one Pranaic ray causes the different aspects of life.
The evolution of life forms on Earth is directed by these rays. The Astral planets receive the life rays of the sun (from “the sun on the Pranic plane”) and reflect them to the astral body of this earth. From here they are precipitated on to the earth and into the individuals.
Planetary Influence Through Rays
The rays also establish connections between planets and Earth. There is a relationship between the terrestrial body (of which man’s body is but a differentiation), and the material bodies of all the planets. There is also a connection between his astral body, and the whole astral plane to which he belongs.
Each planet (for instance, the moon) contributes its unique ray of influence to terrestrial evolution.
Rays and Human Evolution
In human evolution, rays establish the connection between the individual and cosmic forces. The development of human consciousness through successive rounds of evolution is guided by these ray influences, culminating in the full development of Manas (3), as a direct ray from the Universal MAHAT (a ray unimpeded by matter).
Conclusion
The concept of rays in esoteric philosophy provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the connections between cosmic and terrestrial evolution.
These rays represent the channels through which the universal life force manifests across different planes of existence, guiding the development of planets, life forms, and consciousness according to universal laws.
Far from being merely physical phenomena, rays embody the dynamic interplay between spirit and matter that drives the evolutionary process throughout the cosmos.
