The concept of the Seven Rays represents fundamental cosmic energies that create all existence. These rays are not merely abstract concepts but active forces that shape our universe and influence individual development.
The Seven Rays represent different aspects of cosmic energy that manifest through our solar system.
Each ray has specific qualities and colors associated with it, revealing the multidimensional nature of creation.
The rays function across multiple planes of existence:
- In the physical cosmos, they “spread” through the Solar system and form the physical basis of the Ether (through which forces like light, heat, and electricity manifest themselves).
- In the psychic and spiritual realms, they emanate from and have their origin in Occultist Ether (or Akasha).
- In human constitution, they relate to the seven principles of the man, with the divine ray (Atman) proceeding “directly from the One”.
What is Cosmic Fire?
When discussing the First Ray, it’s important to understand that in its pure form it resembles fire (or flame). It is also often associated with the quality of Will – not obstinacy or stubbornness, but rather the drive to act and implement what is necessary.
The Creation initially manifests through “THREE FIRES” before expanding into the seven rays (or “seven fires”).
These three fires (sometimes called – Rays), form a symbol, commonly known as Trinity. The three intersecting rings of colors are:
- Father – Cyan
- Mother (or Holy Spirit) – Golden Yellow
- Son – Magenta
… and are the source of the rest of the spectrum.

The Seven Rays correspond to the seven colors of the rainbow that exist within white light. These colors form the basis of all vibrations that create matter on Earth. In ancient wisdom, these colors are described as being produced by the utterance of sounds in space:
In the beginning was the Word…
Each person has all Seven Rays operating within them at all times, though one ray may be predominant. The “Ray system” describes how the one primordial light or energy differentiates into seven distinct qualities or forces
The Nature and Origin of the Rays
The origin of the rays can be traced to the primordial source described as “the one white ray” which contains all colors within itself. Just as white light passing through a prism breaks into the seven colors of the spectrum, the one divine energy differentiates into seven primary forces.
The rays represent the fundamental building blocks of manifestation across all planes of existence. As they get “outside” of their original “fire prototype capsule”, their colors invert and turn into linear spectrum:

*** Just a note. Below is the color scale that I used. As you see, the last three Rays fit perfectly in between two intersecting triangles. Since the only colors you need to make the rest of the scale are Magenta, Yellow and Cyan, it is very possible that their opposites (or complimentary internal colors – Red, Blue and Green) were omitted:

The way I understand it, the Void (space) – is black, but not exactly. It is filled with invisible light that combines three basic colors:
- Cyan – Fire Element (Electric Fluid). REPRESENTS Positive Pole (+)
- Yellow – Water Element (Magnetic Fluid). REPRESENTS Negative Pole (-)
- Magenta – Air Element. REPRESENTS a Center between two poles, so they don’t mix (isolating medium).
Now, I think I understand the purpose of “Black” Ray #4, but it’s still a bit strange, because I thought we were discussing colors… It seems to be represented by the Earth Element and is a source of ElectroMagnetism in nature.
I am guessing that “particle” is the additive color model and “wave” is a subtractive color model (just my thoughts and maybe you can do a better research):
Now, how do you make this system work and start radiating waves? Just “add” a conscious being to it (also known as AM Presence – or “I Am that I Am“)! In our case here, the Archangels are the ones who represent consciousness of the Rays (the main 7) and Angels represent the rest of the color spectrum.
So, who are humans? We are an “organized system” with a light body that can use any color of the spectrum as something to participate in. We are really – a consciousness and the world (or multitude of them) is our playground!

Once again, these are my thoughts, and it is still work in progress.
I am considering that the last three rays are taken from our regular, linear spectrum and they are not inverted at all. The ray #4 could easily be a “prism” in between, that reflected the light into our world – as the SECOND set of two intersecting triangles (scroll up to see the color chart of it):

In either case, I did my best to combine different information sources about the subject and I hope you are enjoying it. =)
The Rays and their Attributes
Besides colors, the rays are also intimately connected with sound vibrations. In esoteric philosophy they mention that:
“Each ray corresponds to a specific note in the musical scale, and these notes can evoke or enhance the qualities of their corresponding rays.”
The ancient wisdom traditions recognized seven primary notes corresponding to the seven rays. In the Hindu tradition, these are “Shadga, Rishabha, Gandhara, Madhyama, Panchama, and beyond these five Nishada and Dhaivata” (The Secret Doctrine).
The Rays in Nature and Cosmic Structure
The seven rays structure not only individual consciousness but also cosmic processes. In the natural world, the rays express themselves through geometric patterns. These patterns reveal the underlying ray influences that shape material forms.
The sevenfold manifestation of the Sun’s light creates seven gradations of matter on Earth, seven tissues in the human body (from sperm to bone), seven groups of minerals, and seven densities of matter. The rays permeate not just cosmic structures but also the human constitution. Each person’s makeup includes a unique combination of ray influences operating through different aspects of their being.
These ray influences determine psychological characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and evolutionary paths. The predominant ray energy in an individual shapes their approach to life, their methods of problem-solving, and their spiritual journey.
While the primary classification speaks of seven rays, the actual manifestation includes innumerable subdivisions and combinations. This explains the vast diversity observed in nature and consciousness while maintaining the underlying sevenfold structure. Each of the seven primary rays contains within itself further differentiations, creating an almost infinite spectrum of qualities and expressions.
The seven rays emanate from the Central Spiritual Sun as distinct yet interconnected streams of divine energy. Each ray has its own distinctive quality, vibration, and purpose within the grand cosmic design. They are:
“The seven-fold ray from the One”
…and form the basis of all septenary divisions in nature.
The Seven Rays and Their Qualities
Each ray embodies specific qualities, vibrations, and purposes in the cosmic scheme.

Here is the known gradation of the rays (although I think that you have to see them as radial and not linear in order for them to make any sense):
First Ray
- Original Color: Cyan
- Inverted Color: Red
- Sanscrit name: Sushumna
- Qualities: Will, power, purpose, determination
- Purpose: To establish divine will and purpose
- Expression: Leadership, courage, decisiveness
- Chohan (Lord): Morya
- Archangel & Archaea: Michael and Faith
The First Ray the initiating force behind all manifestation and is associated with leadership qualities and the ability to establish order from chaos. Represents faith, valor, courage, strength, and divine will (or the drive to act). It is the masculine energies of creation: outward focused, dynamic, action-oriented.
Often misunderstood as obstinacy or fighting, true First Ray perfection manifests as beauty and magnetism, not conflict. When properly understood, it’s about doing what needs to be done rather than being adamant or disagreeable. It’s the power to initiate action and implement change.
The reason this ray is associated with the blood-red color is because it is also described as the ray of life.
Second Ray
- Original Color: Golden Yellow
- Inverted Color: Blue
- Qualities: Love-wisdom, Illumination, Understanding, Inclusiveness
- Purpose: To unify through love and understanding
- Expression: Teaching, healing, inclusiveness
- Chohan (Lord): Koot Humi
- Archangel & Archaea: Jophiel and Christine
This ray embodies the quality of love-wisdom, working to build connections and understanding between all beings. It is the ray of teachers and healers who work through compassion and wisdom. Represents wisdom, knowledge, illumination, and balanced masculine/feminine energies.
Second ray relates to the experience or “taste” of action. It concerns the quality of consciousness that experiences the results of our deeds. It provides the magnetic quality of understanding and the ability to comprehend the essence of things.
Third Ray
- Original Color: Magenta
- Inverted Color: Green
- Qualities: Active intelligence, Creative Activity, Adaptability
- Purpose: To manifest intelligence in form
- Expression: Creative thinking, planning, adaptation
- Chohan (Lord): Mahachohan
- Archangel & Archaea: Chamuel and Charity
The third ray governs active intelligence and the ability to manipulate energy through thought. Intelligence is like a cassette with potential to record, while knowledge is what gets recorded on it. It represents the capacity to understand, analyze, and apply information.
It works through creative planning and adaptability. Represents abstract thinking, creative intelligence, and feminine/Divine Mother energies. Associated with abstract thinking, philosophy, and higher mental activity. This ray enables us to process information and make sense of our experiences.
Fourth Ray
- Original Color: Black (Dark brown)
- Inverted Color: White (Crystalline color)
- Qualities: Harmony through conflict, Beauty, Intuition
- Purpose: To achieve unity through diversity
- Expression: Artistic expression, mediation, balance
- Chohan (Lord): Serapis (or Sarapis)
- Archangel & Archaea: Gabriel and Hope
This ray works through the contrast of opposites to achieve harmony. Initially, we see the world through “colored glasses” that make us perceive opposites (like friends/enemies). Through this ray, we eventually recognize that these are complementary aspects of the same reality.
It also governs artistic expression and the ability to find beauty in all things. Connected to emotional plane/body and intuition; represents purity and ascension. It is the law of alternation that regulates breathing, heartbeat, and all rhythmic processes.
Fifth Ray
- Associated Color: Orange
- Qualities: Truth, Healing, Consecration
- Purpose: To reveal truth through investigation
- Expression: Scientific inquiry, precision, analysis
- Chohan (Lord): Master Hilarion
- Archangel & Archaea: Raphael and Mary (mother of Jesus)
The Fifth Ray relates to scientific discovery and concrete knowledge. It works through detailed analysis and precise investigation of form. This ray is connected to the mental plane/body.
It’s the ability to perceive laws of nature and understand “what to do”. Scientific discoveries come through Fifth Ray activity. This ray helps us recognize patterns and laws in nature.
Sixth Ray
- Associated Color: Rose (or Ruby with golden radiance)
- Qualities: Peace, Ministration, Grace, Devotion, Idealism
- Purpose: To uplift through devotion to ideals
- Expression: Dedication, persistence, inspiration
- Chohan (Lord): Master Jesus
- Archangel & Archaea: Uriel and Lady Grace (Rainbow Aurora)
This ray embodies devotion and idealism, working through passionate dedication to ideals and causes. This ray is emotionally based with energies focused in the subconscious mind.
True devotion is exemplified by a mother’s selfless love for her child – complete surrender without thought of self. It’s the capacity for pure, selfless love that eventually transforms from personal attachments to spiritual devotion.
Seventh Ray
- Associated Color: Violet
- Qualities: Freedom, Redemption, Purification, Transmutation
- Purpose: To manifest divine pattern on earth
- Expression: Organization, transformation, manifestation
- Chohan (Lord): Master Rakoczi (St. Germain)
- Archangel & Archaea: Zadkiel and Lady Holy Amethyst
This ray is the most predominant on Earth at this time. Associated with invocation, manifestation, service, ceremonial order, ritual, and organization. The seventh ray governs the manifestation of spirit into matter through order, rhythm, and ceremony. It works to establish divine patterns in physical expression.
Zadkiel oversees the Violet Fire which transmutes negative energy. This ray brings synthesis when multiple elements are properly arranged to create something new.
Other Names of the Seven Rays
The seven rays are named in Sanskrit as:
- Sushumna
- Harikesa
- Viswakarman
- Viswatryarchas
- Sannaddha
- Sarvavasu
- Swaraj
Each name is mystical and has distinct applications in different states of consciousness for occult purposes.
| Among these, the Sushumna ray carries the most importance. |
Sushumna Ray
The Sushumna ray is a First Ray of creation (Cyan or Blue) with profound mystical significance in esoteric philosophy. The Sushumna is also identified with a channel in the spine, that connects the heart with the Brahmarandra (the crown of the head). This ray is considered to have exceptional spiritual properties and serves as a connection between physical and higher planes of existence in the cosmic hierarchy of forces.
Practical Applications of Ray Knowledge
Understanding the ray system has profound practical implications. It provides a framework for:
- Self-understanding: Recognizing one’s ray makeup helps identify natural strengths, challenges, and evolutionary path.
- Healing: By working with the appropriate ray energies, imbalances can be corrected and harmony restored.
- Spiritual development: Different rays suggest different approaches to spiritual growth, allowing for personalized practices aligned with one’s essential nature.
- Relationship harmony: Understanding the ray makeup of others facilitates better communication and cooperation by honoring diverse approaches and perspectives.
Conclusion
The seven rays represent a comprehensive system for understanding the differentiation of divine energy into the outer expressions we observe in cosmos and consciousness. From the single white ray to the infinite spectrum of manifestation, this system provides a coherent framework for mapping the qualities, purposes, and expressions of consciousness throughout all levels of existence.
These rays are not merely abstract concepts but streams of energy that permeate all existence, from the highest spiritual planes to the densest physical matter.
They are living intelligences, the “Seven Holy Ones, Self-born from the inherent power in the matrix of Mother substance” .
In essence, each ray represents a specific aspect or quality of the divine consciousness expressing itself through all levels of manifestation.
As we deepen our understanding of the rays, we gain insight into the underlying patterns that shape both cosmic processes and individual development. This knowledge offers a powerful tool for navigating the complexities of existence and aligning with the divine purposes working through all manifestation.
